Kahului, an
industrial and commercial town in the center of the island, is home
to many of Maui's permanent residents who find their jobs close by.
The area was developed in the early '50s to meet the housing needs
of workers for the large sugarcane interests here, specifically
those of Alexander & Baldwin.
THINGS TO SEE AND DO:
Maui Arts & Cultural Center:
An
epic fund drive by the citizens of Maui led to the creation of this
$32 million facility. The top-of-the-line Castle Theater seats 1,200
people on orchestra, mezzanine, and balcony levels; rock stars play
the A&B Amphitheater. The MACC (as it's called) also includes a
small black box theater, an art gallery with interesting exhibits,
and classrooms. The building itself is worth a visit: it
incorporates work by Maui artists, and its signature lava-rock wall
pays tribute to the skills of the Hawaiians. Weekdays 9-5.
West Maui Mountains:
Explore deep, meandering valleys set in the rainforest of the
ancient West Maui Mountains. Knife-edged ridges with mist-shrouded
peaks separate the spectacular valleys. Waterfalls cascade down from
towering cliffs into streams below.
Queen Ka'ahumanu Center
Mall:
The
island?s premiere shopping and entertainment destination. The home
of Maui?s only department stores, Sears and Macy's, plus more than
100 shops and restaurants, from cool island-style boutiques to such
national names as Gap, Sharper Image, Foot Locker and Borders
Express.
Maui Mountain
Riders Bike Tours:
If
you're up for an exhilarating ride down the slopes of Mount
Haleakala, a dormant volcano located in one of the most picturesque
places in the world, Maui Downhill's ready for you. Your route is
entirely flexible, and can consist of 10-38 miles as you wind your
way down the mountainside. You're escorted by professional guides
the whole way, and Maui Downhill provides all the necessary
equipment, including a chrome mountain bicycle, safety helmet, warm
windbreaker suit and insulated gloves. You'll need the cold-weather
gear, since the rides usually start above 10,000 feet, where it gets
chilly even in paradise.
