Lahaina is Maui’s
Party Central, complete with a boardwalk with wall-to-wall
distractions: bars, restaurants, shops of all descriptions, and a
concentration of art galleries that span every imaginable taste and
persuasion. Downtown Lahaina is indisputably the most interesting
evening or afternoon walk around on Maui, especially on the
weekends, and a half-day there can while away in what seems like
minutes.
Lahaina is steeped in history that
speaks to Maui’s cultural diversity, with several museums, temples,
and exhibits that balances the circus-like atmosphere with
substance. Be sure to check out the amazing Banyan Tree, just down
the street from one of the two working commercial harbors on Maui.
Banyan Tree:
This massive tree, a popular and
hard-to-miss meeting place if your party splits up for independent
exploring, was planted in 1873. It's the largest of its kind in the
state and provides a welcome retreat for the weary who come to sit
under its
awesome
branches. Front St., between Hotel and Canal Sts., Lahaina, HI, USA.
Whalers
Village Museum:
The
history-oriented museumbrings to life Lahaina's whaling
era (1825-1860) with hundreds of artifacts, photo murals and
interpretive graphics. The story is told through the eyes of an
ordinary sailor or "whaleman," and illustrates the challenges of
daily life on the sea.
Wo Hing Museum:
Built by the Wo Hing Society in
1912 as a fraternal society for Chinese residents, this eye-catching
building now contains Chinese artifacts and a historic theater that
shows Thomas Edison's films of Hawai'i, circa 1898. Upstairs is the
only public Taoist altar on Maui. 858 Front St., Lahaina, HI, USA.
808/661-5553. Donations accepted. Daily 10-4.
Feast at Lele:
Located
on the beach in historic Old Lahaina Town, The Feast at Lele
literally means the "Feast at Lahaina". Take in a beautiful Maui
sunset and while you sample some exotic island cocktails. Then enjoy
a delicious sit down 5 course feast and open bar while you enjoy an
authentic Polynesian revue that takes you on a journey of music and
dance through the islands of the south pacific.
Maui Submarine Adventure:
Marvel at Maui’s unique underwater paradise aboard a high-tech
48-passenger submarine, as featured in National Geographic
television specials. Guests view the unique fascinating natural
coral reefs, fish and marine life in air-conditioned comfort and
safety.
Baldwin Home:
In 1835 an early
missionary to Lahaina, Ephraim Spaulding, built this attractive
thick-walled house of coral and stone. In 1836 Dr. Dwight Baldwin --
also a missionary -- moved in with his family. The home has been
restored and furnished to reflect the period. You can view the
living room, with the family's grand piano; the dining room; and Dr.
Baldwin's dispensary. The Lahaina Restoration Foundation occupies
the building, and its knowledgeable staff is here to answer almost
any question about historic sites in town. Ask for its walking-tour
brochure. 696 Front St., Lahaina, HI, USA. 808/661-3262.
www.hawaiimuseums.org. $3. Daily 10-4.
