Wailea, the South Shore's
resort community, is slightly quieter and drier than its West Side
sister, Ka'anapali. Most visitors cannot pick a favorite and stay at
both. The luxury of the resorts (edging on overindulgence) and the
simple grandeur of the Shops at Wailea make the otherwise stark
coast a worthy destination. A handful of perfect little beaches all
have public access, and a paved beach walk allows you to stroll
among all the properties, restaurants, and sandy coves. A great
place to watch whales in the winter, the makai, or ocean, side of
the beach walk is landscaped with exceptionally rare native plants.
Beaches:
If you’re a beach person, this area is
paradise. Spectacular snorkeling, warm and clear water, pristine and
expansive stretches of soft sand interspersed with lava
outcroppings, and color-saturated sunsets are coveted by thousands
of visitors each year. Head south on Kihei Road to Wailea, and
you’ll find a string of posh beachfront resorts and fine dining
restaurants, and luxury condominiums and hotels that cater to the
private, high-end vacation experience. Visitors are a diverse
batch from throughout the world, and mingle with part-time residents
and locals in shopping districts and neighborhoods that pocket the
town’s main thoroughfare.
Snorkeling,
Kite surfing, Kayak:
Neighborhood
parks and beaches each have a unique feel. A half-dozen local
snorkeling spots provide accessible admission to reefs that will
shame the the best salt water aquarium you’ve ever seen. This is the
home to one of three designated kite surfing beaches on the island.
You can learn to surf, windsurf, kayak, and kite-surf, or just
watch. Or, just bake in the year-round summer breeze.
Wailea
Shopping Mall:
The 150,000-square foot Shops at
Wailea features more than 60 shops and restaurants, all set in an
award-winnning traditional/contemporary Hawaiian architectural
styling unique to the Valley Isle. Designed with the casual island
elegance in mind, visitors can stroll among soothing fountains and
pools or gather in a spectacular courtyard framed by colorful,
manicured tropical landscaping.
