Kahului, an
industrial and commercial town in the center of the island, is home
to many of Maui's permanent residents who find their jobs close by.
The area was developed in the early '50s to meet the housing needs
of workers for the large sugarcane interests here, specifically
those of Alexander & Baldwin. The company was tired of playing
landlord to its many plantation workers and sold land to a developer
who promised to create affordable housing. The scheme worked, and
Kahului became the first planned city in Hawai'i. Ka'ahumanu Avenue
(Route 32), Kahului's main street, runs from the harbor to the
hills. It's the logical place to begin your exploration of Central
Maui
